One of the highly anticipated events of the year “Alumni rendezvous”
took place on April 27th. Alumni members of NICE were invited from both Pakistan
and abroad. They were warmly welcomed by the faculty members on their arrival.

In the first session, three entrepreneurs introduced
themselves. They shared their success stories with the students. They discussed
how their natural instinct for entrepreneurship helped them succeed. They told
students the 3 fundamental requirements to setup a new business. These include
right idea, right people and capital. They were of the view that possessing any
two of these will be sufficient for starting a business. A right, innovative
idea and having good relations with people in the corporate world will lead to
a successful business launch.
In the second session a group of professionals working in
the field of Civil Engineering introduced themselves. They told students about
the difficulties faced in their jobs and how professional life is different
from university life. They told about the high demand of innovative projects in
the industry and how their project on Building Information Systems (BIM)helped
them in getting jobs immediately after the graduation. They also gave students
some tips regarding preparation for job interviews. Difficulties faced by females
in the field of civil engineering were discussed and their solutions were also
presented.
Alumni members studying abroad spoke through a video link. They
told students that how teaching and studying patterns abroad differed from
those adopted at NUST. They said that
majority of the universities abroad focus more on concepts and research. They
urged NICE administration to focus more on research .They told students about
different scholarships for which they can apply for if they intend to study abroad.
They emphasized on the importance of a good application statement in getting
scholarships. They discussed about commonwealth scholarships, Rhodes
scholarship and the Fulbright scholarships and the procedures for their
application.
The hot topic of the discussion was” whether GPA is
important for getting jobs?” Alumni members told students that most companies
have set a minimum GPA requirement when they shortlist students for an
interview. Furthermore they told students that pay scales in the companies are
dependent on GPA. They concluded by saying that it necessary for students to
maintain a good GPA in order to get good job.
Alumni members were happy that NICE has adequately prepared
them for the challenges they now face in their jobs. At the end there was a
Question/Answer session. Students asked questionsabout the career prospects of
civil engineering .This session greatly helped students in clearing out their
doubts about the field by building a clear picture of the field
The event neared to close with an address by the Associate
Dean. He talked about the importance of communication skills in the field of
civil engineering. He also told about the initiatives taken by his administration
to improve communication skills of the students. The event concluded by
awarding shields to the Alumni members.
