Meet Qandeel Hussain

Knowing Qandeel Hussain!

                                                                        Interview by Fatima Nisar

Since the first batch of NICE graduated in 2012, NICE has produced some of the finest graduates in the field of Civil Engineering. I had the pleasure of interviewing one of our graduates of batch 2008.
Qandeel Hussain graduated from NICE in 2012, the first batch of NICE to graduate. She is currently pursuing her masters in Transportation Engineering from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). She initially wanted to join Pakistan Air Force as a Fighter Pilot but fate brought her to NICE.  NICE has been a home to her where she experienced not only educational learning but also personality grooming. In her own words she said “I owe a lot to NICE for all that it has offered to me. I couldn't have asked for a better start”.

During her undergraduate studies, she used to do internship in all her summer breaks which helped to relate her studies to the practical world. It was her goal to pursue higher education from abroad and well she made it possible! On her experience in KAIST so far she told that engineering is more research oriented. The main focus is on the current developments in the respective research areas. The students are encouraged to explore possible future development options in that area by using their own ideas.
She also gave some very good tips for the future graduates of NICE. According to her experience GPA isn’t everything. It is no doubt common misconception in NICE and the entire Pakistan that a good GPA (3.5 and above) defines your future but it doesn’t. Adding further, she urged the future civil engineers to utilize these four years for learning about this beautiful field, improving concepts, applying them practically and coming up with new ideas. As she put it “It will always pay off, if not now in terms of GPA, then in future, for sure, in terms of success”.
Civil Engineers no doubt define the development of a country. For that a civil engineer should be able to define himself first. We all should strive hard to make our country what we envision it to be by making ourselves who we are supposed to be.  Be proud of being a civil engineer as she is “Becoming a Civil Engineer has not always been my passion. But I must say now I feel proud of my choice.”

I would like to finish with some encouraging words by our beloved senior “Dream big! Only it can actually motivate you to become what you want to be. I wish you all the best for your future endeavours!”
